The Stanford Graduate School of Business and CTO Forum Launch Executive Program for Fortune 500 Technologists

The Chief Technology Officer Forum and Stanford Collaborate to Deliver The CTO Institute, an Executive Education Program for Fortune 500 Technologists August 11-14  June 1, 2010

STANFORD, Calif. June 3rd, 2010—In collaboration with the nonprofit Chief Technology Forum, the Stanford Graduate School of Business will launch a custom executive education program aimed at overcoming the challenges that Fortune 500 chief technologists face.  The program, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Institute, will convene August 11-14 at Stanford. “There are so many challenges that face technologists,” said Robert Burgelman, Faculty Director of the CTO Institute and Edmund Littlefield Professor of Management at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. “The CTO Institute at Stanford provides an excellent opportunity for senior technologists to learn new ways of looking at these challenges, to see both opportunities and the big picture.” “Even in the face of surmounting challenges and in an era of underperformance, there are few resilient organizations that manage to create new industries, define new standards for growth, and give new meanings to the word ‘innovation,’ said Basheer Janjua, Executive Director of the CTO Institute and Founding Chair and President of the CTO Forum. “The question is how to have the majority of our organizations unlearn their decaying strategies, set unreasonable aspirations for renewal, create bold strategies for a game-changing agenda, and instill this discipline in the corporate DNA. The CTO Institute sets an impeccable stage for our leaders to accomplish that.” Fewer than 10% of the companies in the Fortune 500 are generating double-digit growth, said Janjua. Many of the largest technology companies have seen revenues and profits drop. Even Silicon Valley’s engine of innovation, fueled by venture capital, is stalling. The typical venture fund barely beats the rate of return of the money markets. Chief technology officers must spearhead strategies and employ tactics to foster innovation. Many believe that innovation has hit an overwhelming barrier. The Stanford executive education program will bring together chief technologists and senior executives from many organizations, industries, and countries to share experiences and learn new ideas and frameworks for navigating an increasingly complex business environment. Using leading-edge research and teaching materials, which have been field tested in a corporate environment, Stanford’s world-class faculty members, and distinguished members of the CTO Forum, have collaborated to create a dynamic and relevant learning experience for participants.

About the Stanford Graduate School of BusinessThe Stanford Graduate School of Business has built an international reputation based on its two-year MBA Program, one-year Stanford Sloan Master’s Program for mid-career executives, PhD program, and short-course Executive Education programs for practicing executives. As a research institution, Stanford Business School faculty bring cutting edge management ideas into every classroom. A highly collaborative culture, combined with a strategically small student body creates a vigorous intellectual environment and compelling learning experience. In 2007, the School introduced a new MBA curriculum that serves as a model of thought leadership for management education. A state-of-the-art business school campus will open in 2010-2011. It is expected to achieve the highest LEED Platinum certification for environmental sustainability from the U.S. Green Building Council.
